If you can’t clean it…
Was reminded today of cleaning the old wood range, if cleaning is even the right word. Unlike stoves of today, these old ranges had iron tops, not glass and plastic.
Of course that made them heavy as hell too, but a benefit was that you didn’t have to be gentle in the cleaning.
Rather than soft lotions and creams, we used to whack on the comet cleanser, and get a drop of water mixed with it and scrub it with the old waterproof sand paper, better known to us as waterpaper. In the old store we ran in Apsey Brook, we used to sell this by the sheet for just this purpose. Everyone had a wood range and everyone used this to clean it. I guess we weren’t really cleaning it as much as we were sanding it out, but it did the trick. Just took some elbow grease.
Anyway, short post tonight, but while it was fresh in my mind, wanted to get my memories of water paper down.
- Datchewbas?TV and Radio are a little different now than they were back in my childhood. Now we have cable, or satellite, and hundreds of channels with nothing on them. Back then, at my house anyway, we got CBC TV from Port Rexton on channel 13 and, depending on the weather, …
- Minard’s LinimentThe weather was messy the last couple days, rain and wind. Days like these not only cause my sinuses to complain, but also make my decrepit old joints and muscles ache. I don’t know if you remember the old Three’s Company episode where the girls, for whatever reason, mistook the …
- JannyingFrom downhomelife.com Jannying (or mummering) is a tradition from Newfoundland that had nearly died out until popularized in a song by Simani. I had never actually seen a janny until I became one myself. Traditions varied from location to location, but back home at least people would dress in in old …
If you follow the tech scene at all, and likely even if not, you’ve probably heard a lot of buzz about Mastodon lately. I’m actually perhaps a little late to the scene, but I joined the bandwagon this past weekend, and thought I’d share my thoughts and tips. Sorry for any incoherence. And I’ll update […]
Was watching (or trying at least) to watch some sports last night. Harkening back to my love of curling, there’s a tournament in Toronto, and I was expecting coverage. Apparently they aren’t deeming to until Thursday, so be it. But for the love of god, between them TSN and SportsNet have 10 different feeds. Last […]
I can’t say I watch wrestling much anymore, but when I was younger I remember going to some bar or another to watch almost all the major events. I have a memory of this one motel bar out by what used to be the beginning of the divided highway, which was nearly into Kenmount road […]
The NHL announced today it won’t be participating in the next olympics. I get some of the reasons, but I really think it’s short sighted. Yeah it’s in the middle of the season, yeah some of the players could get injured. But they could get injured walking to the rink too. To me the the olympics […]
I’m currently watching the men’s world curling championships. I know a lot of people laugh at the game and can’t seem to follow it, but to me it’s probably my favorite thing to watch. It sounds simple, get your rock as close to the center as you can, and prevent the other team from doing […]
